Car seat expiration Manufacturer-set, typically 6-10 years from date of manufacture (varies 4-12 yr by brand) There is no single federal expiration mandate — each manufacturer sets and labels its own expiration date based on materials degradation (plastic, foam, metal), evolving safety-standard updates, and recall history. LATCH lower-anchor weight limit 65 lb combined (child + car seat weight together) NHTSA guidance, effective February 2014: once the combined weight of the child and the car seat reaches 65 lb, stop using the lower LATCH anchors and switch to installing the seat with the vehicle's seat belt instead. FMVSS 213 — what it certifies Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213, Child Restraint Systems FMVSS 213 sets the federal performance standard every child car seat sold in the U.S. must meet: dynamic sled-impact testing, head-injury criteria, harness and buckle performance, and labeling requirements. Crib slat spacing maximum 2 3/8 inches (about the width of a soda can) 16 CFR Part 1219 (full-size cribs) sets a maximum slat/spindle gap of 2 3/8 inches so an infant's body cannot pass through while the head becomes trapped — the single most important crib-entrapment rule. Crib mattress firmness / gap rule No more than two adult fingers of gap between mattress and crib side; mattress must not indent more than about 1/4 inch The mattress must fit snugly enough that two adult fingers cannot fit between the mattress edge and the crib frame on any side, and a 2022 CPSC federal safety standard for crib mattresses added a mandatory firmness test so mattresses can't be so soft they pose a suffocation risk. Drop-side crib ban Banned nationwide, effective June 28, 2011 CPSC voted unanimously to ban the manufacture, sale, and resale (including donation) of traditional drop-side cribs after they were linked to dozens of infant deaths from suffocation and entrapment. Note: F833 does not itself mandate a 5-point harness (CPSC found a 3-point harness comparably effective in testing), though a 5-point harness — over both shoulders, around the hips, and between the legs — is the widely recommended best practice most manufacturers include. Carrier hip-healthy positioning "M-position" — knees spread apart and slightly higher than the buttocks, thighs supported The International Hip Dysplasia Institute recommends carriers that support the thigh and let the legs spread in the M/spread-squat position, similar to the position used in Pavlik-harness hip-dysplasia treatment. JPMA certification meaning Voluntary third-party verification to the relevant ASTM standard The JPMA Certification Seal (now run under the Baby Safety Alliance, formerly the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) means an independent accredited lab tested the product against its ASTM standard and inspected the manufacturer's production line — it is voluntary, going beyond the baseline legal requirement, not a claim the product is risk-free. Product registration & recall lookup Required postage-paid registration card on durable infant products; check CPSC.gov/Recalls and SaferProducts.gov Federal law requires durable infant and toddler products to include a registration card so manufacturers can contact owners directly if a recall happens.
